From the tables above, you can see that the Active 2 has more features than the Active 1, but these two still share a lot in common. Moreover, Active 1 alongside the Galaxy watch were updated with some of the UX features present on the Active 2. Both watches are very compact and lightweight too, a major reason they are some of the most popular choices on the market.
Although the Active 1 is slimmer and weighs a little less than both models of the Active 2. However, Active 2 has a bigger 1.4/1.2 inches display that no doubt makes it easier to read the display even for those with eye problems (44mm). While the Active 1 is only available in aluminum, the Active 2 is available in both aluminum and stainless steel (LTE model).
The Active 2 spots a more durable Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ which is designed for clarity and scratch resistance compared to Corning Gorilla Glass 3 of the Active 1.
The Active 2 comes with both microphone and loudspeaker that allows you to make and receive calls via Bluetooth connectivity to your phone, while the Active 1 has only a microphone, but lacks a loudspeaker. However, you can make or check incoming calls and answer them from your Galaxy Watch Active, but you will proceed to continue the conversation through your compatible mobile device. This makes no sense, and that’s a huge thumbs down for the Active 1.
Both Active 1 and Active 2 will allow you to use the Bixby voice assistant feature to do simple tasks simply with your voice.
Both watches are fitness-focused and will track your active life comprehensively, but Active 2 is a more comprehensive fitness tracker. Its heart rate sensor has more 8-LED compared to 4-LED of the Active 1, this enables more accurate heart rate tracking. Additionally. Its accelerometer can measure up to 32G compared to 16G of the Active 1. This translates to more accurate motion tracking.
Active 2 also features blood pressure and ECG tracking which the Active 1 lacks.
The stainless steel model of the Active 2 comes with an e-SIM that enables cellular connectivity and allows you to make and receive calls directly from the watch independent of your phone. Active 1 lacks this feature and this make the Active 2 a standalone smartwatch.
The Active 2 comes with a bigger battery capacity than it’s predecessor, and even though the Active 1 has a smaller display size, from the test carried out on always-on display for both watches, the Active 2 has about 2 days long battery life compared to about a 1 day of the Active 1. Mind you, the 44mm Active 2 has a slightly longer battery than the 40mm model.
Which is Better and Should You Upgrade?
Clearly, Active 2 is a better smartwatch than Active 1. It has far more features like Bluetooth calling, wider display, more durable and premium design, slightly longer battery life, and improved and more fitness tracking features. If these features mean much to you, then you should go for the Active 2.
If you already own Active 1, I wouldn’t recommend an upgrade especially with the Galaxy Watch 3 about to be released any time soon.
